Obama, A Dream Come True, part III: Raised to Lead America

continued from part II

[Obama] has been raised believing that he will help to lead America [Destiny’s Child]

Raised to lead America?!

He certainly acts like it. So how can I not cringe when hearing his

I’m not running because I feel it’s owed to me.”

From early symptoms of Rule the World syndrome, to a newly acquired brother-in law, who confides that as early as 1992

He[Obama]said, ‘I think I’d like to teach at some point in time, and maybe run for public office,’” recalls Robinson, who assumed Obama meant he’d like to run for city alderman. He said no — at some point he’d like to run for the U.S. Senate. And then he said, ‘Possibly even run for president at some point.’

Some point?

ASAP is more accurate. To peers at Harvard, his unfounded ambitions were clear. (Who needs experience, when you have drive?)

Mundy of the Washington Post:

according to those who know him, he has been talking about the presidency for more than a decade. “It was clear to me from the day I met him that he was thinking about politics,” says Harvard Law School classmate Christine Spurell.

Say that again Obama?

“I’m not running to fulfill some long held plans.

Yah…

In the late eighties, participants with Obama in the Seguardo Seminars organized by the Robert Putnam, noticed that

Obama talked so openly about his political future that the group began referring to him, teasingly, as “Governor.”

They must have been amused, if by the third meeting, a they gathered around him and asked,

‘When are you running for president?’

From laughter to tears, in a few short posts. Shortly after graduating from Harvard -his father’s alma mater- Obama ran into the man who would take his “Rule the World” syndrome seriously - David Axelrod.

David Axelrod was a young political consultant based in Chicago. Barack Obama, fresh from Harvard Law School and largely unknown, was coordinating a voter registration drive here [Chicago]. One day, Axelrod got a call from a friend. “She said, ‘I just met the most extraordinary person,’” he recounted. “‘I think he may be the president of the United States one day.‘ And I thought, “That’s kind of a grandiose thing to say.’”

Grandiose indeed, but there’s never a shortage of grandiose ambitions, and Axelrod’s was no exception.
